It is a case of what might have been for those who were planning on supporting the Newcastle Miners this season as offensive lineman Mathu Gibson signs with the Denver Broncos in the NFL.

Gibson, a fast and agile lineman out of Division II school Wingate University was listed to head to the NGL and the Miners this season before the start date was pushed back to October 2017.

After missing out on the draft, and again after an invite to the rookie minicamp of the New York Jets in May, it looked like any journey to the NFL was via a long haul fly to Australia.

But as they say, as one door closes, another opens, and within a week of the NGL postponement, Gibson finds himself suiting up for last season’s super bowl winners the Denver Broncos.

To make way for Gibson, fourth year backup center Sam Brenner was waived after struggling with injury and not playing a game for the NFL champions last season. Before that he had featured in 10 games for the Dolphins over three years.

God changed my life in one week, I’m excited to see where this journey takes me with the Denver Broncos.

Gibson will join the Broncos before their first preseason game against the Chicago Bears. Australian Adam Gotsis is expected to make his debut appearance for the Broncos as a defensive end in the same game.

Making the signing even sweeter for Gibson is that today is his birthday. While any player coming this late into camp is a long shot to make the starting roster of any NFL squad, I am not sure you could get a better present.

As players start sorting out their futures with the NGL postponement, AussieFaithful is getting word of a couple more players who were to head down under receiving invites to NFL team tryouts.

Again. What might have been this season.
